Killer Thrillers Finalists by NPR

NPR asks you to submit nominations for a list of the 100 most pulse-quickening, suspenseful novels ever written. 600 titles were submitted.

Now, with your input, a panel of thriller writers and critics has whittled that list down to a manageable 182 novels. That roster, which we now offer for final voting, draws from every known thriller sub-genre — techno, espionage, crime, medical, psychological, horror, legal, supernatural and more.
For the purposes of this contest, we'll stick with the answer James Patterson once gave, which is that thrillers are defined by the "intensity of emotions they create ... of apprehension and exhilaration, of excitement and breathlessness. ... By definition, if a thriller doesn't thrill, it's not doing its job." If the closely related mystery genre is about discovery, then thrillers are more oriented towards action and suspense. The villain may be known from the start; the fun comes from finding out how the hero will foil whatever evil plans are afoot.
In the end, you'll decide what makes the top 100. Everyone gets 10 votes. Feel free to lobby for your favorites in the comments area. We'll announce the winners on August 2. from the NPR website.
Click on the title and vote your favorites!

A busy few days!

Kids were kept very busy the last few days at the library, enjoying two unique acts.  On Thursday, July 8, nationally known juggler and acrobat Jason Huneke performed some amazing juggling stunts with the help of the audience and his unicycle.  On Monday, July 12, recording artist Dennis Warner sparked the crowd with original songs, including "Beads on the String."  Both acts were courtesy of the Friends of the Hibbing Public Library.

DON'T FORGET! Summer may be winding down, but there is still things to do at the library.  On Thursday, July 22, the library will present two free movies: Shark Tale (rated PG) at 1pm and Finding Nemo (rated G) at 3pm.  Both are free and include a bag of popcorn!

The Cheapskate Next Door by Jeff Yeager

Jeff Yeager hit the road in January 2008 bicycling and staying in the homes of cheapskates like himself which he found through CouchSurfing.com.
Jeff says: "What I began to realize was that despite their wide range of lifestyles, family situations, and personal beliefs, the people I'd met-and hundreds more I would meet and correspond with in the months to come-had in common a set of vitally important practices and philosophies when it came to money and the role money plays in their lives. They know how to live happily, but in a most nontraditional American style: The cheapskate next door knows the secrets of how to live happily below one's means."
