In the last book, Shoot to Thrill, Grace MacBride goes sailing off into the sunset with retired FBI agent John Smith. The boat is boarded in the middle of the night by two men with flashlights who try to knife John. Grace’s past training comes in handy as Grace is forced to shoot them and toss them overboard. John and Grace conceal the murders as they quickly establish that someone is trying to kill John for continuing to work counterterrorism while retired. John goes into hiding while Grace goes back to her life in Minneapolis to get help from her Monkeewrench associates to find who is trying to kill John. Annie, Roadrunner, and Harley Davidson are back as well as homicide detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth in another crime solving case in the sixth book in the Monkeewrench series.

The Map of Lost Memories by Kim Fay

Practically raised in the Brooke Museum, Irene Blum always thought she would be in charge of the museum one day. But in 1925, women were easily passed over in favor of men in key positions. Irene's benefactor instead sends her off to the Far East in search of the lost copper scrolls of the Khmer civilization with several names of people who could be of help to her. Irene, upset with being passed over, is determined to find the scrolls and open a museum of her own with the scrolls giving her the recognition she deserves.
What causes some people to drop everything they have ever known and go off on an adventure?
Anne, a person who had abandoned a - in her words - a decent husband, a comforable home - offers this explanation:
"I'm thankful every day for that moment of recklessness. How else would I every have made it to the other side?"
"What do you mean, the other side?"
"The place where one feels truly alive. Too many people surrender to a place of safety. That place where all they do is long to sleep so they can dream about living. Even if you don't find what you think you're looking for, darling, it's the going out and looking for it that counts. That is the only way you can know you have lived. "

The Great Escape by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

Excerpt:
CHAPTER ONE

"Lucy couldn’t breathe. The bodice of her wedding gown, which had fit so perfectly, now squeezed her ribs like a boa constrictor. What if she died of suffocation right here in the lobby of the Wynette Presbyterian Church?

Outside the doors, an international army of reporters stood at the barricades, and the sanctuary inside bulged with the rich and famous. Only a few steps away, the former President of the United States and her husband waited to escort Lucy down the aisle so she could marry the most perfect man in the world. The man of everyone’s dreams. The kindest, the most considerate, the smartest... What woman in her right mind wouldn’t want to marry Ted Beaudine?"

Interesting Websites: Written in Bone

skull
From the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History:
"Written in Bone examines history through 17th-century bone biographies, including those of colonists teetering on the edge of survival at Jamestown, Virginia, and those living in the wealthy and well-established settlement of St. Mary’s City, Maryland.
The forensic investigation of human skeletons provides intriguing information on people and events of America's past. No other inanimate objects make us feel the same passionate curiosity as the remains of once-living, breathing individuals like us. And nothing else can answer our questions in quite the same ways."

Lake Country by Sean Doolittle

Mike Barlowe and Darryl Potter served together with Evan Morse who was killed by a roadside bomb in Ramadi. Back in Minnesota, Evan’s younger sister is killed by an inattentive driver, Wade Benson. Benson receives a light sentence and Darryl Potter decides that kidnapping Benson’s daughter is a better punishment.
After Darryl kidnaps Juliet Benson, Mike Barlowe feels obligated to help a fellow marine because buddies stick up for each other. Darryl is a head case and Mike knows it and helps his friend anyway. Mike finds Darryl and Juliet up in northern Minnesota lake country and tries to help both Juliet and Darryl.

“For just a moment, Mike didn’t see the Darryl Potter in the canoe with him. Instead, he saw the beat-up Marine leaning over him in the back of a Humvee. In his mind, Mike saw a white smile in a battle-grimed face, and he recognized that face for what it truly had been: the face of a soul at ease. A man in his element, doing a job he’d been cut out to do. Happy.”
“Darryl Potter didn’t need any medals. What he needed was an enemy.” And Wade Benson was it.
