Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

On the morning of their 5th anniversary, Nick’s wife, Amy, disappears into thin air.  Then the story begins; Amy’s story – Nick’s story.  Both are very adept at lying.  The novel has many layers and plot twists and the characters are very well developed.  If you enjoy mystery and intrigue then this novel should not be missed.

The book has had rave reviews:
Flynn cements her place among that elite group of mystery/thriller writers who unfailingly deliver the goods…Once again Flynn has written an intelligent, gripping tour de force, mixing a riveting plot and psychological intrigue with a compelling prose style that unobtrusively yet forcefully carries the reader from page to page.  Library Journal (Starred review)

Gone Girl is one of the best—and most frightening—portraits of psychopathy I've ever read. Nick and Amy manipulate each other—with savage, merciless and often darkly witty dexterity. This is a wonderful and terrifying book about how the happy surface normality and the underlying darkness can become too closely interwoven to separate.  Tana French, New York Times bestselling author of Faithful Place and Into the Woods

The plot has it all. I have no doubt that in a year’s time I’m going to be saying that this is my favorite novel of 2012. Brilliant.  Kate Atkinson, New York Times bestselling author of Started Early, Took My Dog and Case Histories

Gone Girl manages to be so many stellar things all at once—suspenseful, inventive, chilling, funny, unsettling—as well as beautifully plotted and fiercely well-written. Gillian Flynn is a thrilling writer.  Kate Christensen, PEN/FAULKNER award-winning author of The Great Man

Special Legacy Program

“The Most Fun You Can Have
Without Moving Your Lips”

The Hibbing Public Library and the Arrowhead Library System announce a fun, free show for all ages being offered at the Hibbing Public Library:

Hibbing Public Library, Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at 10:30 a.m.

Come see James Wedgwood and his amazing comic ventriloquism. Like a one-man variety show, James makes virtually everything talk, from wooden “associates”, to purses, bottles, and even audience members - yes, they open their mouths and James provides the surprising words! A game show, singing (without moving his lips) and much more are all part of the fun.

James Wedgwood, who resides in western Minnesota, majored in Theater and graduated with a BA degree from Indiana. He picked up the art of ventriloquism at a young age when one of his aunts sent him a plastic dummy and an audio course on how to be a ventriloquist. From then on he studied acting, improv, and stand-up comedy before becoming a full-time ventriloquist in 1988.

With outrageous characters and hilarious audience participation, this is a performance unlike any other and one you will not want to miss!  The show is appropriate for all ages so feel free to bring the whole family.

This event is sponsored by the Arrowhead Library System and funded by money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Ten by Gretchen McNeil

Ten

It was supposed to be the weekend of their lives—an exclusive house party on Henry Island. Best friends Meg and Minnie each have their reasons for being there (which involve T.J., the school’s most eligible bachelor) and look forward to three glorious days of boys, booze and fun-filled luxury.

But what they expect is definitely not what they get, and what starts out as fun turns dark and twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message: Vengeance is mine.

Suddenly people are dying, and with a storm raging, the teens are cut off from the outside world. No electricity, no phones, no internet, and a ferry that isn’t scheduled to return for two days. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on each other, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine? (from the cover)

Little Wolves by Thoms Maltman

First Line: "She heard him from the mountain, a voice high and thin, breaking the night's quiet."

"Set on the Minnesota prairie in the late 1980s during a drought season that’s pushing family farms to the brink, Little Wolves features the intertwining stories of a father searching for answers after his son commits a heinous murder, and a pastor’s wife (and washed-out scholar of early Anglo-Saxon literature) who has returned to the town for mysterious reasons of her own. A penetrating look at small-town America from the award-winning author of The Night Birds, Little Wolves weaves together elements of folklore and Norse mythology while being driven by a powerful murder mystery; a page-turning literary triumph." From the cover.
