Sweet by Valerie Gordon

Looking for something tempting for a New Year's Party? Why not scope out Sweet by Valerie Gordon? This lush, delicious looking book has confections to drool over, to give and to serve. For instance "Chocolate Pots de Creme" are luscious individual ramekins of chocolate custard, perfect for a dinner party desert. There are fancy versions of your favorite cakes and candies, and also lovely, down-home versions of favorite cookies, like gingersnaps (perfect for ice cream sandwiches!).

Friday Foodie Feature

Do you have a last minute vegetarian or vegan guest for the holidays? Welcome him or her with wholesome dishes like portobello "steak" fajitas, or get adventurous with marinated balsamic, maple and garlic tempeh. "The Oh She Glows Cookbook," from the writer of the blog of the same name, features these yummy recipes and more. There are also last minute gift ideas (I love those!) like the glo bar, with cranberries and almond butter. Some ingredients might require a trip to the Virginia Food Co-op, but most are available locally. Check it out on our New Book shelf!

Foodie Friday Feature

Check out "International Night: a father and daughter cook their way around the world" for a thoughtful and witty adventure that will make your mouth water. You might even recognize some of your favorites from across the world. For instance, Romania's Sarmale sound an awful lot like the Iron Range Sarmas I tried last weekend. Check it out on our New Books shelf!

The Republic of Imagination: America in three books by Azar Natisi

The Republic of Imagination

From NPR: In her surprise 2003 bestseller, Reading Lolita in Tehran, Iranian emigrĂ© Azar Nafisi made clear why fiction matters in totalitarian regimes. With The Republic of Imagination, she seeks to demonstrate the importance of great literature even in a democratic society, one threatened not by fundamentalist revolutionaries but by the danger of "intellectual indolence."
