NoveList recomends the novel Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. It is described as a character driven, fast-paced, first person narrative.
Hurtled back through time more than two hundred years to Scotland in 1743, Claire Randall finds herself caught in the midst of an unfamiliar world torn apart by violence, pestilence, and revolution and haunted by her growing feelings for James Fraser, a young soldier.
This time travel romance was well reviewed. Publishers Weekly called it, "Absorbing and heartwarming, this first novel lavishly evokes the land and lore of Scotland, quickening both with realistic characters and a feisty, likable heroine."
Kirkus stated, "Once-in-a-lifetime romantic passion and graphically depicted torture sessions are only the two extremes of this lively time-travel romance set in 18th-century Scotland--an imaginative and lighthearted debut by a promising newcomer."
Outlander was originally published in 1991 and is available in a variety of printed and audio formats. If you enjoy the story there are six other titles in the series that you can try.
