The Science of Good Cooking

The Science of Good Cooking

America's Test Kitchen: "We start the process of testing a recipe with a complete lack of conviction, which means that we accept no claim, no theory, no technique, and no recipe at face value. We simply assemble as many variations as possible, test a half-dozen of the most promising, and taste the results blind. We then construct our own hybrid recipe and continue to test it varying ingredients, techiques, and cooking times until we reach a consensus. The result, we hope, is the best version of a particular recipe, but we realize that only you can be the final judge of our success (or failure)."

The Devil's Causeway by Matthew Westfall

Watch the videos of Matthew Westfall talking about his book: http://www.goodreads.com/videos/list_author/5813494.Matthew_Westfall

1899, Phillippines.
From the prologue: "This moment was one to be captured for posterity. Twenty-three gaunt, starving men approached a gray boulder that punctuated the rock-strewn bank of the river. Wracked by disease and riddled with sores, the haggard souls mustered their last reserves of energy to hoist each other up and jostle into position. A small American flag was handed to the dazed senior naval officer of the party, Lieutenant James C. Gillmore, Jr., who weakly held it aloft."
This is the true story of America's first prisoners of war in the Philippines, and the heroic U. S. Army Expedition to rescue them.

Flat Bob is in Massachusetts for the Holidays

A couple of years ago the library created "Flat Bobs" and gave them out at Dylan Days.  We asked everyone that took one to let us know where in the world "Flat Bob" was and what he was doing when they got back home.  Even though we gave out over 100 "Flat Bobs" only a couple of reports have filtered back to us.

Recently we received Holiday Greetings from Tom and Dee Drake.  "Flat Bob" is in Massachusetts for the holidays!

Happy Holidays, Tom and Dee.  It is good to know that one of our "Flat Bobs" is still alive and travelling.

Read and Dream

Did you know that the golf tee was first patented on December 12, 1899?  Two Scottish golfers, William Bloxom and Arthur Douglas were the gentlemen with the idea.  Winter in Scotland is not quite as cold and snowy as it is in Minnesota but it still may be a bit nippy playing golf in December.

Let's face it, if you are a golfer living in Minnesota then reading about your sport is the next best thing.

Check out some of the books in the library on golfing and be ready for spring.

Stephanie Plum, Lula and Grandma Mazer work a case together:

"Lula almost jumped the curb when she saw Grandma in front of the hair salon. Grandma was wearing a blond Marilyn Monroe wig, a hot pink tank top, black Pilates pants, and black kitten heels."

"I got a sweater in my purse,' Grandma said."I'm all prepared. I could take care of any situation. I'm packing heat more ways than one."

The Edge of Nowhere

Elizabeth George, author of seventeen books about Inspector Thomas Lynley, has written a new book for Young Adults.

The Edge of Nowhere takes place on Whidbey Islands (Washington state) as a Becca King tries to establish a new life after running from the whispers that told her that her step-father had murdered his business partner. She comes into contact with kind and cruel classmates and adults, experiences homelessness and helps solve the mystery of athlete Derric's fall in a local forest park. I loved the setting of this book and the subtle level of ESP Becca lives with. There will HAVE to be a sequel if not a trilogy because there is much left unanswered at the end (torture!!)
Find this and other titles for teens and adventurous adults in the Young Adult section at the north end of the main floor (where the Hunger Games series is shelved). ~Ginny
