Raptor Show
Thursday, June 17 at 2:00pm

The Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center (Finland, MN) will bring raptors and other bird species to the library for a fun and educational presentation on Thursday, June 17 at 2pm.

The program will be outside on the library lawn.  If it rains, it will be moved inside to the children's room or auditorium, depending on number of attendees.

The Ballad Novels by Sharyn McCrumb

Spencer Arrowood, an Appalachian sheriff, in the Appalachian Ballad series, solves crime in the North Carolina/Tennessee mountains. These books include: If Ever I Return, Pretty Peggy-o, The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter,  She Walks These Hills and The Rosewood Casket, which deal with the issue of the vanishing wilderness; The Ballad of Frankie Silver, the first woman hanged for murder in North Carolina; The Songcatcher, a genealogy in music; and Ghost Riders, an account of the Civil War in the Appalachian Mountains.

Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum

Now that we are enjoying the 2010 Baseball Season, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is a place to honor the game. When it opened on June 12, 1939 in Cooperstown, N.Y., the Hall of Fame officially became the home of baseball by serving as its cornerstone and housing the stories honoring the greats of baseball's past. Summer Reading Program begins soon!

Make a Splash at your Library!

The 2010 Summer Reading program sign-up begins Friday, June 4, 2010, at 9am.  Once again, readers will set their own goals for the summer, but with a twist:  each reader will be assigned to one of two reading teams.  For each book read, team members can place a glass stone in their team's jar.  Not only can you watch your team's progress, but you will know which team read the most books at the end of the program!

The first program, Underwater Adventures, is full, but the Wolf Ridge Raptor Center will be showing their birds on Thursday June 17 at 2:00pm.  There is no pre-registration for this program.

Due to the Underwater Adventures program, there will be no Pre-school Story Time on Tuesday, June 8.  The first Story Time for the summer season is Tuesday, June 15 at 10:00am.  Toddle Time begins on Thursday, June 10 at 10:00am.

The Parks and Recreation Craft Van will be making it's normal Tuesday stop at the library every Tuesday, starting on June 8.  Free crafts and games are available 1:00-4:00pm.

This picture-book biography of the inventor of bubblegum is equal parts informative and entertaining. With appropriately simple but engaging prose, McCarthy relates how accountant Walter Diemer began "playing with different mixtures" in the late 1920s at the candy factory where he worked and eventually discovered a gum that bubbled. Judicious use of the inventor's own words helps to convey his enthusiastic personality. Along with Diemer's story, the author also covers a bit of gum history, the trial-and-error of invention, and the excitement that comes with a successful final product, all with just the right level of detail. Appealing acrylic cartoon illustrations fill this snippet of history with a sense of fun. The prominent curves of smiling faces and circular eyes and heads stand out against heavy lines and angles to fill each scene with playfulness that matches the subject. Rich colors capture the lighthearted joy of bubble blowers, both old and young, while contrasting darker tones reflect the drama of the inventor's lab work. Stuff: Compulsive Hoarding and the meaning of things by Randy O. Frost and Gail Steketee

The book Stuff profiles real hoarders whom the authors have studied for years. According to Randy Frost and Gail Steketee, they were the first scientists to study hoarding. Several examples are given including one of the more famous cases of the Collyer brothers who did their hoarding in Harlem during the first half of the 20th century.

Underwater Adventures

Due to the popularity of the Underwater Adventures program, pre-registration is required and limited to 100 participants.  As of May 24, the program has reached 100 pre-registrants.  Those who wish to be put on the waiting list may still sign-up.

On the day of the program, June 8, those on the pre-registration list will be let into the auditorium first.  If any seats remain at 10am, those on the waiting list will be allowed to enter, starting with those at the top of the list.

Come to the Library for Banana Bread!

June 30, 1999, Beatty Zimmerman was interviewed by Sandy Thompson for the Duluth News. During their chat, she agreed to share one of the family’s favorite recipes,  “This is a wonderful recipe and to make it is so easy, dear. All of the children like their Grandma’s banana chocolate chip loaf bread. They like it because it’s not too sweet.”

Beatty Zimmerman’s Banana Chocolate Chip Loaf Bread
1 cup granulated sugar

½ cup (1 stick) butter or margarine, softened

2 eggs

4 tablespoons sour cream

2 –3 ripe bananas, mashed

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 (6 ounce) package chocolate chips (or up to 12 ounces)

2 medium disposable foil loaf pans (about 8-by-3-by-2 inches)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream together the sugar and butter. Add the eggs and beat well. Add the sour cream and ripe bananas; mix well. In a separate bowl, combine the flour and baking soda. Add the dry mixture to the sour cream mixture, then fold in the chocolate chips. Divide the batter between two greased loaf pans. Bake for about 50 minutes. Turn the loaves out on to cooling rack or aluminum foil as soon as they are done.
Beatty says this recipe is no-fail and “It’s one minute to make.”

• Brush up on your first aid.  Minor bumps and scrapes are common but still may need some first aid.  The sooner you catch an injury and let it heal, the sooner your kids can be back outside enjoying summer.  Learn how to identify more serious injuries.  They need to be treated immediately.
• Teach your kids (and make sure you know) what poison ivy looks like.
• Keep an eye on the temperature.  Remember sugary drinks actually can dehydrate you.

Deep Shadow by Randy Wayne White

Doc Ford and Tomlinson are back hunting treasure in this fast paced 17th book in the series. Arlis Futch, cantankerous old coot and sometime friend of Doc Ford insists he knows where the Batista plane crashed carrying gold from Cuba to Florida in the 1950s. Fleeing Cuba before the Castro brothers took over, Batista raided museums and national treasures to pack 4 cargo planes – all but one landed safely. The fourth plane crashed and treasure hunters have been looking for it ever since.

Arlis Futch thinks he has found the treasure in an inland lake and invited Ford, Tomlinson, and Will Chaser, juvenile delinquent, introduced in the previous book, Dead Silence, to dive in a fresh water lake and find the treasure plane.

80 Years of Nancy Drew

Nancy Drew, plucky detective, has been around entertaining young women for 80 years with the entrance of her first book, The Secret of the Old Clock, by Carolyn Keene, the pen name for several ghost writers.
According to USA Today: If Nancy Drew — still an amateur detective after all these years — aged like the rest of us, she'd be 98.
A new anniversary copy of the first edition will be released on April 29.

Split Rock Lighthouse celebrates its 100th birthday in 2010

A mighty and fatal 1905 gale over western Lake Superior spurred the construction of Split Rock Lighthouse overlooking one of the world’s most dangerous stretches of water. On July 31, 1910, after five years of arduous labor constructing the edifice atop a 130-foot sheer rock cliff, the now world-famous North Shore landmark first sent its powerful beam out across the water.
The Minnesota Historical Society is getting ready to celebrate the centennial of Split Rock Lighthouse in 2010.
Restored to its early-20th century splendor, it is one of America’s best-preserved lighthouses. Special activities and events will be offered throughout the year, along with the popular destination’s regular programming.
More than 120,000 visitors a year tour the lighthouse and keeper’s home, climb the lighthouse tower to see the original, still operational French bivalve lens, and take their own shots of one of the most photographed sites in the country. "For many who visit Split Rock Lighthouse this is their first view of Lake Superior," says Lee Radzak, the historic site's manager and modern-day keeper. "Seeing the endless horizon from the top of the lighthouse and the great ships far out on the sparkling water, just as the early keepers saw them, is an experience many people never forget." As a poetry-and-music duo, The Sutter Brothers have performed all over Minnesota and beyond—from Sandstone’s Quarry Days to the International Poetry Forum in Pittsburgh, from the Big Top Chautauqua in Bayfield, Wisconsin, to the Fitzgerald Theatre in St. Paul. Ross is known for his rich baritone voice and mastery of an impressive array of instruments: guitar, button accordion, mountain dulcimer, and Irish drum. He has appeared on A Prairie Home Companion and at The Winnipeg Folk Festival. The author of six books, Bart has won the Minnesota Book Award three times and was named the first Poet Laureate of Duluth. Though Ross and Bart have established individual reputations, when they perform as a pair, their work has the kind of counterpoint and easy intimacy unique to sibling acts. Celebrate Art and Culture With the Library

The Arrowhead Library System is offering a day tour to The Museum of Russian Art and The Minneapolis Institute of Art on June 5, 2010. Your bus trip includes round trip deluxe restroom equipped motor coach service departing from the Virginia Public Library, and admission to the two museums. Flyers with registration information are available at the Hibbing Public Library.
Free museum passes are also still available at the library. Bring in your library card and check out passes to places like the Great Lakes Aquarium, Duluth Depot, and the Judy Garland Museum. A recent addition is a pass to the Lake County Historical Society Museums. This pass gives you free admission to the D & IR Depot Museum, Two Harbors Light Station, 3M Museum, and the Edna G. Tugboat Tour.

The God of the Hive by Laurie R. King

Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes are back, fleeing from criminals, shady government officials, and Scotland Yard while trying to keep their charges alive and safe. Using The Times Agony column to communicate with each other, they attempt to establish a link with Mycroft Holmes, an intelligence operative for England, and find that Mycroft Homes has been taken in for questioning by Inspector Lestrade and warrants are out for the arrest of Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes. Fleeing with her granddaughter, Estelle, Mary reestablishes contact with the pilot, Javitz, whom you meet at the end of The Language of Bees. They board the plane and while in the air narrowly escape assassins. Javitz, unfortunately, is shot while flying the plane and they make an unscheduled crash landing on an estate where they are taken in by an unlikely hermit.

Sherlock Holmes fleeing with his newly found son, Damian Adler, gets assistance from the sea and charters a boat to Holland. Damian Adler, wounded by a religious fanatic who wanted to kidnap his daughter, Estelle, is a well known artist and the son of Irene Adler, with whom Sherlock Holmes once had a liaison.
