Gray Mountain by John Grisham

Samantha Kofer's life has derailed. She has been working for a big firm of lawyers in New York when the whole economy takes a serious downturn. She is promised her job back - maybe - in a year - if she goes to work for a legal aide clinic. The non paid positions are going fast so she takes a chance and drives to Brady, Virginia deep in Appalachia where coal is king and the people and the mountains are less than nothing.
