April is Financial Literacy Month and the USA.gov site has some great tips.

Choose the Right Savings Account

Understanding the difference between different kinds of savings accounts can be overwhelming. Your goal is to find a safe place to put your money, but with all the options, how do you know which account is right for you?
Before making your decision, consider the following:

• Minimum deposit amount: Does the account require you to keep a certain amount of money in the account at all times?
• Limit on withdrawals: How often can you take out money?
• Interest: How much will your money earn just for being in the account?
• Deposit Insurance: Is your money insured in case something happens?
• Convenience: How easy it is to for you to deposit or withdraw money?

Be Prepared for an Emergency

Being financially prepared doesn't just mean you understand your budget and have a healthy emergency fund. While having savings to fall back on will make it easier to recover after a disaster, a lack of quick access to cash and not being able to locate vital records, ATM cards or proof of identification can make it harder to get back on your feet quickly.

FEMA recommends you put together a financial emergency preparedness kit. Take inventory of valuables in your home for your insurance. Take photos of the items as well as the inside and outside of your house.
Store these photos, along with a small amount of cash and copies of important documents (like your insurance policies) in a safe place at home as part of your emergency disaster kit. In the event of an emergency, you'll be able to use your kit to help file insurance claims.

Teach Your Kids Good Money Habits

Smart saving and spending habits start early in life. You can help your kids understand money basics with fun and educational comic strips from Kids.gov. The comics teach the importance of saving and help kids find creative ways to be frugal.

The library invites you to sign up for our online book clubs.  Pick out the type of books that you enjoy and you will receive a short 5 minute excerpt from a book in your email each day.  You will receive a new title every week.  Enjoy the short read with your morning coffee and before long you will be hooked.  Check out the book at the library so you can finish it.  It will be a relaxing break in your day.

Here is one of Suzanne’s recipes that you can enjoy with your family and friends.

Green Beans Jazzed with Tomato

1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed and cut diagonally into 1 inch pieces

¼ cup butter

¼ cup finely chopped onion

1 small clove garlic, minced

1 tablespoon light brown sugar

1 tablespoon lemon juice

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon dried oregano, crushed

1/8 teaspoon pepper

2 medium tomatoes cut up

Steam the green beans until crisp-tender, or boil in salted water for about 15 to 18 minutes.  While beans are cooking melt butter in skillet, add onion and garlic; cook and stir over medium heat for about 3 to 4 minutes.  Stir in brown sugar, lemon juice, salt, oregano, and pepper.  Add tomatoes.  Heat thoroughly.  Drain the green beans, then add the tomato mixture to them and gently toss.

April is National Poetry Month

Hibbing Public Library and the Arrowhead Library system present poet, Ryan Vine.  Vine's Distant Engines  received a 2005 Weldon Kees Award and was published by Backwaters Press.  He is an Assistant Professor of English at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota, and has been published in numerous poetry journals.

Professor Vine will be at the Hibbing Community College in Room B204 on Friday, April 12th from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m.  He will share selections of his work, followed by an interactive discussion focused primarily on the use of metaphor.  The public is invited to this event.  The program is intended for adults and students high school age or above.

The digital media catalog for downloadable eBooks and audio books has a new look!  Overdrive has updated their interface and made it easier to use.

Check out their new HELP SCREEN if you want an overview of the changes.

Here is a quick overview of the process:

3. Browse and search for eBooks and audiobooks
4. When you find a book you want to read, click on the title and select 'Borrow'

Operation Napoleon by Arnaldur Indridason

The Music and Culture of Latin America

Join Nixon Bustos, Bass and Melanie Sever, Flute as they explore the culture and history of Latin America.  They will take you on a tour through Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Ecuador, Cuba, and Venezuela in an interactive program.  Audience members will learn tradition Latin rhythms, play various folk percussion instruments, and even get the chance to try out their dancing feet with styles like the Argentinian Tango, Colombian Cumbia, and Brazilian Samba.

This program is a part of the Music to You Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra series.  It is being sponsored by the Arrowhead Library System and Hibbing Public Library.  The project was funded by a grant from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Come see James Wedgwood and his amazing comic ventriloquism. Like a one-man variety show, James makes virtually everything talk, from wooden “associates”, to purses, bottles, and even audience members - yes, they open their mouths and James provides the surprising words! A game show, singing (without moving his lips) and much more are all part of the fun.

James Wedgwood, who resides in western Minnesota, majored in Theater and graduated with a BA degree from Indiana. He picked up the art of ventriloquism at a young age when one of his aunts sent him a plastic dummy and an audio course on how to be a ventriloquist. From then on he studied acting, improv, and stand-up comedy before becoming a full-time ventriloquist in 1988.

With outrageous characters and hilarious audience participation, this is a performance unlike any other and one you will not want to miss!  The show is appropriate for all ages so feel free to bring the whole family.

Black Irish by Stephan Talty

Detective Absalom Kearney, along with her partner, Zangara, investigate the murder of Jimmy Ryan who was kidnapped, tied to a chair and killed in the unheated basement of an old abandoned Irish Catholic church in Buffalo, New York. Abby Kearney, comes home to take care of her father, John, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Retired from the Buffalo Police Department, John Kearney, adopted Abby as a toddler and provided her with an education and now a career in the same police department that made him a legend. When the next body is found, murdered and carved with a knife, Abby and her partner are able to tie the murders to the Clan, an old secret organization rumored to have connections with the IRA in Ireland.
Deeply immersed in the Clan culture growing up, Abby understands the wall of silence she faces when she goes to the victims’ families for information. Not sure if the killer is in the Clan or killing off the Clan, Abby and her partner have very few leads to follow when the killer makes it personal and comes after Abby and her father. Many twists and turns in the plot keep the suspense taut and the reader guessing who the killer is until the end. Another book about Absalom Kearney and the Irish community she came back to protect and serve would be a pleasure to read.

~ Rules of participation~

1. An activity booklet, bookmark, and a coloring contest sheet will be given out to each child after they sign up for the reading program. Also included: a free book from the Literacy Action Center!

 

2. Book logs will be displayed at the library, in glass entryway.

First name plus initial letter of last name only on book logs please!

3. Keep track of the time that you spend reading for your timed book log at home, and for every 100 minutes you spend reading you receive a sticker to put on your reading chart, and you get to pick a prize out of our PRIZE BINS!

4. Each week we will have Weekly Prize Drawings! Just check out library books, enter to win, one entry per day!

5. Awards given out during the 4^th week, prizes maybe picked up thru March 8, 2013!

The Death Relic by Chris Kuzneski

Dr. Maria Pelato, Italian Archaeologist, flies to Cancun, Mexico for a mysterious job offer from an American scholar and anthropologist, Terrance Hamilton. Hamilton, who wants Maria’s expertise with Christian artifacts, he has been working at a hidden Mayan archaeological site. Do you have photos you always intended to organize when you got around to it?

Do you have basic computer skills?

Would you like to find a way to enjoy your photos and share them with friends and family in a meaningful way?

If your answer to these questions is “yes”, we have the class for you! Mark McCarty will lead you through the process of importing, viewing, fixing, tagging and organizing your photos into a slide show, then adding music. Once you have the basics down, Mark will also give you tips on editing your slides in a variety of ways. This is not a hands-on class, but rather a demonstration – you do not need to bring anything. A discussion of software choices will be included.

Eveleth native and retired accountant Mark McCarty has combined his computer knowledge with his hobbies of music and photography to develop this class. Mark tells us, “The first efforts were with a song my son had written titled, ‘Welcome Back’. John’s song sounds like a sentimental visit to your hometown. I created a DVD with photos from Eveleth and John’s song playing in the background. Many other local cities now have their own slide shows based on this idea.”

Plan to spend an informative hour at the Hibbing library and leave with a new skill.

Hibbing Public Library

Bring your lunch and travel with Doug Ohman to his favorite locations in Minnesota.

Doug Ohman is a freelance photographer and popular public speaker. He has traveled throughout the upper Midwest photographing historic architecture. During this program he will share many historic sites and structures that are quickly being lost to history.  Stories and interesting historical information about some of Minnesota’s most treasured buildings will be presented. Many of the buildings and sites have been featured in his book series “Minnesota Byways”. 

Doug will also tell his own story on how he took his passion for history and love of photography and combined them into a successful career.

Doug’s work is available in art prints, matted and framed. His work can be found throughout the Midwest at fine shops and boutiques. He also is involved in many community art and craft fairs. Enjoy his photography, www.pioneerphotography.com 

Doug has degrees in both Geography and History from the University of Minnesota. His interest in these subjects has translated well to his work as a photographer. His photography talent is self-taught. Before becoming a full time photographer, Doug was the Operations Manager at the Mall of America.    

AAUW Book Sale

The American Association of University Women will be holding their annual book sale on February 1, 2, and 3, 2013.  There will be over 50,000 books and all proceeds go to local scholarships.

Friday, February 1st from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.  ($1.00 per book)

Saturday, February 2nd from 9:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. (.50 per book)

Sunday, February 3rd from 11 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. ($1.50 per bag of books)
