Free Tickets to Rose Ensemble Concert

The Rose Ensemble will be performing in the Hibbing High School Auditorium on Tuesday, October 16^th at 7:00 p.m.  Hibbing is one of their stops on this year’s statewide tour.

William Kent Krueger



Trickster's Point is the latest book in the series set in northern Minnesota featuring Cork O'Connor along with his friends and family. Cork is being investigated for the death of one of his oldest friends, Jubal Little, a favored candidate for the governor of Minnesota. Little, stuck by an arrow while hunting with Cork takes three hours to die and Cork is immediately suspected for not getting help until his old friend is dead. Even worse, an arrow similar to arrows Cork uses for hunting, is buried in Little's chest. Twelth in the series, Trickster's Point is one of Krueger's best.

New Public Art at the Library

Glass sculptor, Ron Benson has installed new public art work in the front entrance of the library.  His sculpture depicts the art, culture, and history of Hibbing in glass panels constructed to look like storybooks.  This project was sponsored by the Arrowhead Library System and funded in full by Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Lake Country by Sean Doolittle

Duluth Summer OperaFest

The library has a limited number of free tickets to the first annual Duluth Summer OperaFest, “A Night at the Opera,” and “Opera Film Festival”.

 

“A Night at the Opera” will be at Marshall School’s Fregeau Auditorium in Duluth on August 16^th at 7:30 p.m. Regular prices are $30 per adult and $15 per youth/student. There will also be a pre-concert reception at 6:30 p.m. provided by Minnesota Public Radio with special Guest host and MPR radio personality, Steve Staruch.

 

The “Opera Film Festival” will be in Duluth at Zinema 2 on August 17 -19.  Films include Amadeus, La Traviata, The Magic Flute, The Life of Maria Callas, and A Night at the Opera. Regular price is $10 per film.

 

Patrons who check out free tickets at the library must call to reserve their seats prior to the event using the phone number listed on the tickets. Reservations are accepted on a first called, first served basis. Your ticket will not be valid without a pre-phoned reservation. Seating for all events is limited.

Hibbing History

Hibbing Public Library has a large collection of articles and books on the history of Hibbing. Beginning in the 1890’s, early settlers, moving of North Hibbing to advance mining, mining locations, and yearbooks from Hibbing High School are located at the circulation desk. 

The book, Hibbing Minnesota, on the Move Since 1893, available for $5, gives an overview of early Hibbing.

Try a New Author This Summer

NoveList recomends the novel Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.  It is described as a character driven, fast-paced, first person narrative.

Hurtled back through time more than two hundred years to Scotland in 1743, Claire Randall finds herself caught in the midst of an unfamiliar world torn apart by violence, pestilence, and revolution and haunted by her growing feelings for James Fraser, a young soldier.

The Minnesota Paranormal Study Group will be presenting a program on some of the spots in the state that they have investigated, checked out, and found worthy of the world "haunted".  Teens and adults will enjoy this program on Wednesday, July 18th at 4:00 p.m.

Lake Superior Day 2012

Lake Superior Day is Sunday, July 15th. It is an annual event held the 3rd Sunday in July by the Lake Superior Bi-national Forum. The Forum offers a Lake Superior Stewards program to help people who care about the Lake find ways to protect it. For more information or to register to become a Steward go to superiorforum.org.




10 ways to protect the Lake



1. Save Water. Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth and install low-flow shower heads. Small changes can save hundreds of gallons per year.

2. Recycle as Much as You Can. The four”Rs”: reduce, reuse, recycle, and repair—save money, avoid waste. Never burn trash!

3. Curb Yard Pollution. Put your lawn on a chemical-free diet, or at least reduce your use of pesticides and fertilizers. Whatever you put on your yard washes into streams, rivers, and lakes.

4. Help Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers. Inspect your boat and trailer, and remove any plants or animals before leaving a boat access. Don’t pick up invasive hitchhikers.

5. Go Native. Landscape with plants antive to your region. They’re heartier, need less maintenance.

6. Plant Trees. Trees provide shade, prevent erosion, make homes for wildlife.

7. Tap the Rain. Install a rain barrel to douse gardens rather than using tap water.

8. Energize Your Home. Create an energy-efficient home. Reduced electricity and energy use reduces toxins in the air and in the Lake.

9. Waste Not. Take all household hazardous materials to appropriate waste collection sites. Don’t flush hazardous materials, pile them in the yard, or throw them into the trash.

10. Love the Lake. This is the most important of all! Get out and enjoy the Big Lake any way that you can.

Photo Contest for Teens

All area teens can post their photographs on the library's Facebook page.  Winning photographs will be based on how many like you receive.  All pictures mus tie in with the "Own the Night" teen reading program theme.

How to do it:

• Stop in at the library and sign a waiver.
• Take a photo that has a "night" theme.  Pictures may be black and white, sepia, or full color.  Both traditional photography or digitally manipulated images will be accepted.
• One person can enter up to five photographs.
• Include your first and last name, and email address with each entry.
• Entries must be the newly created original work of entrant, must not infringe upon third-party rights, and cannot violate any copyright laws or existing trademarks.
• The photograph cannot have unintelligible wording, obscene, or offensive language or imagery.

The book will also be available for purchase.

Butterfly Dreams is a book designed to help children who have or will experience the loss of a best friend or person close to them. In this story, Maddy loses her best friend, Allie, and feels sad, scared, and alone. She must learn how to work through her grief as a special visitor teaches her about life and love.

The First 20 Minutes by Gretchen Reynolds

In the New York Times article about the book, The Surprising Shortcut to Better Health, Gretchen Reynolds says: "I wanted people to understand that this is a book about how little exercise you can do in order to get lots and lots of health benefits. Two-thirds of Americans get no exercise at all. If one of those people gets up and moves around for 20 minutes, they are going to get a huge number of health benefits, and everything beyond that 20 minutes is, to some degree, gravy."

Adult Literacy Hotline

The Minnesota Literacy Council has recently shared information about their Adult Literacy Hotline.

The Adult Literacy Hotline is a phone and internet-based referral service for free adult basic education programs statewide.  They refer adults to GED preparation and testing sites, adult diploma programs, basic reading, math and computer classes, English Language (ESL) and citizenship classes.  To reach the Adult Literacy Hotline, you can
call 1-800-222-1990,

visit www.mnliteracy.org/hotline.

Adults will be referred to their closest local programs that have the classes they require.
