All the Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr

This story takes place in Europe during WWII and centers largely on the German occupation of France. The author, who uses alternating glipses into several peoples' lives weaves a story with his characters, which are well developed and believable. He does this and yet manages to maintain a certain amount of mystery and suspense. You'll find yourself being "drawn in" as the individuals of the story are drawn together. As an added bonus, you'll also come away with a better understanding of this time in history. I highly recommend this book.

Homegrown Tea: An Illustrated Guide to Planting, Harvesting, and Blending Teas and Tisanes by Cassie Liversidge

Maybe you have made a resolution to reduce your stress level. Consider the cup of tea: a warm soothing ritual of patience and tastiness. Cassie Liversidge offers ways to cultivate and create lovely cups of tea, using caffeinated and herbal blends in her book Homegrown Tea. Most of us in the far north of the United States will need a greenhouse to grow our own Camellia sinensis, otherwise known as the tea plant. All black, green and even white teas come from this little plant, related to the fragrant white camellia. However, we can make teas from so many more plants, including commonly known kitchen herbs and spices. If you're looking to take the step of cultivating a tea garden, this little book has plenty of instructions to make a start, including mint and lemongrass. Sweet by Valerie Gordon

Looking for something tempting for a New Year's Party? Why not scope out Sweet by Valerie Gordon? This lush, delicious looking book has confections to drool over, to give and to serve. For instance "Chocolate Pots de Creme" are luscious individual ramekins of chocolate custard, perfect for a dinner party desert. There are fancy versions of your favorite cakes and candies, and also lovely, down-home versions of favorite cookies, like gingersnaps (perfect for ice cream sandwiches!).

Friday Foodie Feature

Do you have a last minute vegetarian or vegan guest for the holidays? Welcome him or her with wholesome dishes like portobello "steak" fajitas, or get adventurous with marinated balsamic, maple and garlic tempeh. Bones Never Lie by Kathy Reichs

Seventh Book in the Temperance Brennan series, Brennan is investigating a cold case that is related to a new case in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Andrew Ryan and Brennan originally investigated Anique  Pomerleau, a Canadian, wanted for abduction and murder of several young girls. Pomerleau disappeared and was never captured.
Even Brennan's mother, living in a mental health facility, with terminal cancer, does research that helps Brennan tie the two cases together.
Slidell, homicide, and Brennan, forensic anthropologist, often work cases together in Charlotte and now they are looking at a murdered young girl, Lizzie Nance. This time the case also involves the jurisdiction of Quebec and Brennan's old partner both privately and professionally - Andrew Ryan. Andrew Ryan has been on leave from his job since his daughter died. Brennan tracks Ryan to Costa Rica and persuades him that he is needed on the case. Pomerleau has resurfaced and may be responsible for the disappearance of Shelly Leal who may still be alive. Ryan is reluctant but as the case heats up Brennan and Ryan are once again working together.
