Flat Bob is in Massachusetts for the Holidays

A couple of years ago the library created "Flat Bobs" and gave them out at Dylan Days.  We asked everyone that took one to let us know where in the world "Flat Bob" was and what he was doing when they got back home.  Even though we gave out over 100 "Flat Bobs" only a couple of reports have filtered back to us.

Recently we received Holiday Greetings from Tom and Dee Drake.  "Flat Bob" is in Massachusetts for the holidays!

Happy Holidays, Tom and Dee.  It is good to know that one of our "Flat Bobs" is still alive and travelling.

Read and Dream

Did you know that the golf tee was first patented on December 12, 1899?  Two Scottish golfers, William Bloxom and Arthur Douglas were the gentlemen with the idea.  Winter in Scotland is not quite as cold and snowy as it is in Minnesota but it still may be a bit nippy playing golf in December.

Let's face it, if you are a golfer living in Minnesota then reading about your sport is the next best thing.

The Edge of Nowhere

Elizabeth George, author of seventeen books about Inspector Thomas Lynley, has written a new book for Young Adults.

The Edge of Nowhere takes place on Whidbey Islands (Washington state) as a Becca King tries to establish a new life after running from the whispers that told her that her step-father had murdered his business partner. She comes into contact with kind and cruel classmates and adults, experiences homelessness and helps solve the mystery of athlete Derric's fall in a local forest park. I loved the setting of this book and the subtle level of ESP Becca lives with. There will HAVE to be a sequel if not a trilogy because there is much left unanswered at the end (torture!!)

Speaking from Among the Bones: A Flavia de Luce Novel by Alan Bradley

Speaking from among the Bones (Flavia de Luce Series #5)

St. Tancred’s Church, England 1951. In order to celebrate 500 years since the death of their holy Saint Tancred, the church membership will open his tomb. Flavia de Luce, a rather precocious child, makes sure she is on hand to witness this epic occasion. On the day the tomb is opened, Church Organist Mr. Collicutt, missing for the past several months, is found entombed in the crypt that houses the saint. Nothing puts Flavia’s detecting skills to the test like a dead body presumably poisoned. Flavia, for only being 12 years old, is something of an expert in poisons after staking claim to the chemistry laboratory of her deceased Uncle Tar in the moldering estate of her impecunious family.
Getting around the village and countryside with her trusty bicycle, Gladys, inherited from her mother – missing and presumed dead in a mountain climbing accident - Flavia runs a parallel investigation with the local constabulary.  The Inspector warns her that her detecting would put her in danger if the killers realize she is getting close to the truth, for Flavia has solved murders in the past and has built herself something of a reputation for crime solving.

This time Flavia has competition when Adam Sowerby, flora-archaeologist, as well as Miss Tanty, chairman of the Altar Guild, want to collaborate with Flavia on finding the killer and be part of her investigation. Three amateur sleuths trying to figure out the Legend of the Heart of Lucifer gives a motive as to why Mr. Collicutt was murdered.
Book five in the series, you can read more about Flavia de Luce on her website: http://www.flaviadeluce.com

The Liberator by Alex Kershaw

Crown
General Felix Sparks:
"They lay beneath perfect rows of white graves that lined lush green lawns. He knew where they were buried. He had their names."
"Often he had questioned what kept his men going. The American Army was on the attack all the time in Europe. He had kept thinking, Why do they go? It was hard to explain why his men had not hesitated. Many times he had said: 'Let's go!' Every time they had gone."
"The graves of his men stretched across Europe, over two thousand miles. They had died in Sicily, in France, at the dark heart of Nazi Germany."
"...General Felix Sparks wandered through towns he had set free, across battlefields and through several graveyards. The white crosses were silent. The men who had died for him could not be resurrected."

See "The Hunger Games" during Teen Read Week

Teen Read Week is an initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). Teen Read Week started in 1998.  If you have teens at home now is the time to encourage them to read for pleasure and to visit their libraries for free reading materials.

Why is it important to celebrate? For a lot of reasons! Teens have so many options for entertainment, so it's important to remind them to spend time reading for pleasure: it's free, fun, and can be done anywhere! Research shows that teens who read for fun have better test scores and are more likely to succeed in the workforce. Also, it’s a great chance to let your school or your public library communities know how important teen services are! Let teens know the possibilities that exist within the covers of books.

The Hibbing Public Library will be having a special movie day for teens on Thursday, October 18th at 3:00 p.m.  Come in and watch the Hunger Games and get free popcorn.  Check out the “teen section” in the library and find out how the library website can help with your homework 24/7.

Bones Are Forever (Temperance Brennan, #15)

The Temperance Brennan Series, Book #15, is set in Canada. Brennan is looking at the deaths of 3 infants presumed to belong to one woman - Alma Rogers? - with many aliases. Homicide detective Andrew Ryan, who has had an off-again on-again relationship with Brennan is also back along with Ollie Hasty of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who had a brief affair with Brennan decades ago. This unlikely and bristly trio travels to Edmonton and Yellowknife on the trail of Alma Rogers, who could possibly be the serial killer of her own babies.
