Free Program! Everyone Welcome!! Julia A. Maki Pyrah an author originally from Deer River, Minnesota, will be at the Hibbing Public Library Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. She will be reading her book titled My Mom Hunts Submarines, along with a book signing, and a submarine craft for the kids to follow.

My Mom Hunts Submarines is a book I wrote for my children to explain a bit about the unique job I held while serving in the US Navy as an Aircrewman aboard P-3’s.  Our primary mission was to fly aboard these planes and hunt for enemy submarines.  At the time of my service, the combat rate had only recently been opened to women- therefore, there were very few of us.  I currently reside in southern Maryland and work at Naval Air Station Patuxent River as an acoustic tester on the planes that I flew on in the military.  I feel now as though I have the best of both worlds- working as a civilian for the Navy!

Throughout my book the resounding theme is “There isn’t anything you cannot do.”  Having firsthand experience with many of the obstacles (Aircrew school, SERE school- POW training), this is a message I am very passionate about.  I have spoken at many of the schools in the local areas regarding this theme, as well as emphasis on the military and patriotism ,and have been met with an overwhelming positive response.
My next book “All Hands on Deck! Dad’s Coming Home!” is due for release this June-!  -Julia A. Maki Pyrah
