Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

On the morning of their 5th anniversary, Nick’s wife, Amy, disappears into thin air.  Then the story begins; Amy’s story – Nick’s story.  Both are very adept at lying.  The novel has many layers and plot twists and the characters are very well developed.  If you enjoy mystery and intrigue then this novel should not be missed.

The book has had rave reviews:
Flynn cements her place among that elite group of mystery/thriller writers who unfailingly deliver the goods…Once again Flynn has written an intelligent, gripping tour de force, mixing a riveting plot and psychological intrigue with a compelling prose style that unobtrusively yet forcefully carries the reader from page to page.  Library Journal (Starred review)

Gone Girl is one of the best—and most frightening—portraits of psychopathy I've ever read. Nick and Amy manipulate each other—with savage, merciless and often darkly witty dexterity. This is a wonderful and terrifying book about how the happy surface normality and the underlying darkness can become too closely interwoven to separate.  Tana French, New York Times bestselling author of Faithful Place and Into the Woods

The plot has it all. I have no doubt that in a year’s time I’m going to be saying that this is my favorite novel of 2012. Brilliant.  Kate Atkinson, New York Times bestselling author of Started Early, Took My Dog and Case Histories

Gone Girl manages to be so many stellar things all at once—suspenseful, inventive, chilling, funny, unsettling—as well as beautifully plotted and fiercely well-written. Gillian Flynn is a thrilling writer.  Kate Christensen, PEN/FAULKNER award-winning author of The Great Man

Place your reserve for Gone Girl today.

Special Legacy Program

“The Most Fun You Can Have
Without Moving Your Lips”

The Hibbing Public Library and the Arrowhead Library System announce a fun, free show for all ages being offered at the Hibbing Public Library:

Hibbing Public Library, Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at 10:30 a.m.

Come see James Wedgwood and his amazing comic ventriloquism. Like a one-man variety show, James makes virtually everything talk, from wooden “associates”, to purses, bottles, and even audience members - yes, they open their mouths and James provides the surprising words! A game show, singing (without moving his lips) and much more are all part of the fun.

James Wedgwood, who resides in western Minnesota, majored in Theater and graduated with a BA degree from Indiana. He picked up the art of ventriloquism at a young age when one of his aunts sent him a plastic dummy and an audio course on how to be a ventriloquist. From then on he studied acting, improv, and stand-up comedy before becoming a full-time ventriloquist in 1988.

With outrageous characters and hilarious audience participation, this is a performance unlike any other and one you will not want to miss!  The show is appropriate for all ages so feel free to bring the whole family.

This event is sponsored by the Arrowhead Library System and funded by money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Ten by Gretchen McNeil

Ten

It was supposed to be the weekend of their lives—an exclusive house party on Henry Island. Best friends Meg and Minnie each have their reasons for being there (which involve T.J., the school’s most eligible bachelor) and look forward to three glorious days of boys, booze and fun-filled luxury.

But what they expect is definitely not what they get, and what starts out as fun turns dark and twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message: Vengeance is mine.

Suddenly people are dying, and with a storm raging, the teens are cut off from the outside world. No electricity, no phones, no internet, and a ferry that isn’t scheduled to return for two days. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on each other, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine? (from the cover)

Little Wolves by Thoms Maltman

First Line: "She heard him from the mountain, a voice high and thin, breaking the night's quiet."

"Set on the Minnesota prairie in the late 1980s during a drought season that’s pushing family farms to the brink, Little Wolves features the intertwining stories of a father searching for answers after his son commits a heinous murder, and a pastor’s wife (and washed-out scholar of early Anglo-Saxon literature) who has returned to the town for mysterious reasons of her own. A penetrating look at small-town America from the award-winning author of The Night Birds, Little Wolves weaves together elements of folklore and Norse mythology while being driven by a powerful murder mystery; a page-turning literary triumph." Black Irish by Stephan Talty

Black Irish: A Novel by Stephan Talty
Detective Absalom Kearney, along with her partner, Zangara, investigate the murder of Jimmy Ryan who was kidnapped, tied to a chair and killed in the unheated basement of an old abandoned Irish Catholic church in Buffalo, New York. Why someone would want to carve up a gas meter reader with a knife somehow makes the killing personal. Abby Kearney, comes home to take care of her father, John, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Retired from the Buffalo Police Department, John Kearney, adopted Abby as a toddler and provided her with an education and now a career in the same police department that made him a legend. When the next body is found, murdered and carved with a knife, Abby and her partner are able to tie the murders to the Clan, an old secret organization rumored to have connections with the IRA in Ireland.
Deeply immersed in the Clan culture growing up, Abby understands the wall of silence she faces when she goes to the victims’ families for information. Not sure if the killer is in the Clan or killing off the Clan, Abby and her partner have very few leads to follow when the killer makes it personal and comes after Abby and her father. Many twists and turns in the plot keep the suspense taut and the reader guessing who the killer is until the end. Another book about Absalom Kearney and the Irish community she came back to protect and serve would be a pleasure to read.

The Outpost: An untold story of American valor by Jake Tapper

Afghanistan.
Summer 2006.
"But sir...that is a really awful place for a base."
This new camp in the Kamdesh District would, like the dangerous Korangal outpost that their pilots knew too well, be surrounded by higher ground. But whereas the base in the Korangal was situated about halfway up a mountainside, in a former lumberyard, the one in Kamdesh would sit in a cup within the valley's deepest cleft, ringed by three steep mountains that formed part of the five-hundred-mile-long Hindu Kush mountain range.
"So it's located at the base of a mountain peak?" Whittaker asked. It didn't take a Powell or Schwarzkopf to know that as a matter of basic military strategy, it was better to be at the top of a hill than at the bottom of a valley. From the prologue

October 2009.
Hundreds of insurgents attacked Outpost Keating. The 50 Americans fighting off the Taliban insurgents called for air support, but the Apache helicopters wouldn't get there for another hour.
The Americans fought.

Hamilton, who wants Maria’s expertise with Christian artifacts, he has been working at a hidden Mayan archaeological site. Maria, puzzled that she would be called to consult on the Mayans when her knowledge is clearly with Christianity, is first angry and then fearful when Hamilton disappears. Unsure whether Hamilton has been kidnapped or she is the victim of a hoax, she turns to the two people she can trust implicitly for they have saved her life once before. David Jones and Jonathon Payne, retired from Special Forces and adrenaline junkies, are happy to leave winter in Pittsburgh where they test equipment for Payne Industries, and fly to Mexico to help Maria.

On the trail of Hamilton, Maria and her friends encounter CIA agents and drug cartels while trying to figure out how the destruction of the Mayan empire by the Conquistadores centuries ago has drawn in them into a fight for their lives today.

Attend This Free Program!

Do you have photos you always intended to organize when you got around to it?

Do you have basic computer skills?

Would you like to find a way to enjoy your photos and share them with friends and family in a meaningful way?

If your answer to these questions is “yes”, we have the class for you! Mark McCarty will lead you through the process of importing, viewing, fixing, tagging and organizing your photos into a slide show, then adding music. Once you have the basics down, Mark will also give you tips on editing your slides in a variety of ways. This is not a hands-on class, but rather a demonstration – you do not need to bring anything. A discussion of software choices will be included.

Eveleth native and retired accountant Mark McCarty has combined his computer knowledge with his hobbies of music and photography to develop this class. Mark tells us, “The first efforts were with a song my son had written titled, ‘Welcome Back’. John’s song sounds like a sentimental visit to your hometown. I created a DVD with photos from Eveleth and John’s song playing in the background. Many other local cities now have their own slide shows based on this idea.”

Plan to spend an informative hour at the Hibbing library and leave with a new skill.
This event is sponsored by the Arrowhead Library System and the Hibbing Public Library and funded by money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Kinsey and Me

Sue Grafton writes: "Kinsey Millhone entered my life, like an apparition, sometime in 1977. I was living in Columbus, Ohio, at the time, writing movies for television while my husband attended Ohio State, working on his Ph.D. She arrived by degrees, insinuating herself with all the cunning of a stray cat who knew long before I did that she was here to stay."

The first nine stories are little gems of Kinsey Millhone detection followed by thirteen stories featuring Kit Blue, a younger version of Sue herself.

The Science of Good Cooking

The Science of Good Cooking

America's Test Kitchen: "We start the process of testing a recipe with a complete lack of conviction, which means that we accept no claim, no theory, no technique, and no recipe at face value. We simply assemble as many variations as possible, test a half-dozen of the most promising, and taste the results blind. We then construct our own hybrid recipe and continue to test it varying ingredients, techiques, and cooking times until we reach a consensus. The result, we hope, is the best version of a particular recipe, but we realize that only you can be the final judge of our success (or failure)."

Wracked by disease and riddled with sores, the haggard souls mustered their last reserves of energy to hoist each other up and jostle into position. A small American flag was handed to the dazed senior naval officer of the party, Lieutenant James C. Gillmore, Jr., who weakly held it aloft."

Bosch, specifically asked for the Jespersen murder case since the case started with him at the crime scene. He felt the case had been neglected and remained unsolved because of the riots and not he wanted another chance at solving the murder.
