Pujol, on the other hand was the emperor of an imaginary world. He was the linchpin in the plan to fool Hitler into believing the attack was coming not at Normandy but up the French coast at Calais. Try a New Author This Summer

NoveList recomends the novel Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.  It is described as a character driven, fast-paced, first person narrative.

Hurtled back through time more than two hundred years to Scotland in 1743, Claire Randall finds herself caught in the midst of an unfamiliar world torn apart by violence, pestilence, and revolution and haunted by her growing feelings for James Fraser, a young soldier.

This time travel romance was well reviewed.  Publishers Weekly called it, "Absorbing and heartwarming, this first novel lavishly evokes the land and lore of Scotland, quickening both with realistic characters and a feisty, likable heroine."

Kirkus stated, "Once-in-a-lifetime romantic passion and graphically depicted torture sessions are only the two extremes of this lively time-travel romance set in 18th-century Scotland--an imaginative and lighthearted debut by a promising newcomer."

Outlander was originally published in 1991 and is available in a variety of printed and audio formats. If you enjoy the story there are six other titles in the series that you can try.

Lake Superior Day 2012

Lake Superior Day is Sunday, July 15th. It is an annual event held the 3rd Sunday in July by the Lake Superior Bi-national Forum. The Forum offers a Lake Superior Stewards program to help people who care about the Lake find ways to protect it. For more information or to register to become a Steward go to superiorforum.org.

10 ways to protect the Lake

1. Save Water. Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth and install low-flow shower heads. Small changes can save hundreds of gallons per year.

2. Recycle as Much as You Can. The four”Rs”: reduce, reuse, recycle, and repair—save money, avoid waste. Never burn trash!

3. Curb Yard Pollution. Put your lawn on a chemical-free diet, or at least reduce your use of pesticides and fertilizers. Whatever you put on your yard washes into streams, rivers, and lakes.

4. Help Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers. Inspect your boat and trailer, and remove any plants or animals before leaving a boat access. Don’t pick up invasive hitchhikers.

5. Go Native. Landscape with plants antive to your region. They’re heartier, need less maintenance.

6. Plant Trees. Trees provide shade, prevent erosion, make homes for wildlife.

7. Tap the Rain. Install a rain barrel to douse gardens rather than using tap water.

8. Energize Your Home. Create an energy-efficient home. Reduced electricity and energy use reduces toxins in the air and in the Lake.

9. Waste Not. Take all household hazardous materials to appropriate waste collection sites. Don’t flush hazardous materials, pile them in the yard, or throw them into the trash.

10. Love the Lake. This is the most important of all! Get out and enjoy the Big Lake any way that you can.

The First 20 Minutes by Gretchen Reynolds

In the New York Times article about the book, The Surprising Shortcut to Better Health, Gretchen Reynolds says: "I wanted people to understand that this is a book about how little exercise you can do in order to get lots and lots of health benefits. Two-thirds of Americans get no exercise at all. If one of those people gets up and moves around for 20 minutes, they are going to get a huge number of health benefits, and everything beyond that 20 minutes is, to some degree, gravy."

MN Author Julia A. Maki Pyrah to visit the Hibbing Public Library Tuesday, July 3rd @ 10:00 a.m.

10:00 a.m.

Free Program! Everyone Welcome!! Julia A. Maki Pyrah an author originally from Deer River, Minnesota, will be at the Hibbing Public Library Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. She will be reading her book titled My Mom Hunts Submarines, along with a book signing, and a submarine craft for the kids to follow.

My Mom Hunts Submarines is a book I wrote for my children to explain a bit about the unique job I held while serving in the US Navy as an Aircrewman aboard P-3’s.  Our primary mission was to fly aboard these planes and hunt for enemy submarines.  At the time of my service, the combat rate had only recently been opened to women- therefore, there were very few of us.  I currently reside in southern Maryland and work at Naval Air Station Patuxent River as an acoustic tester on the planes that I flew on in the military.  I feel now as though I have the best of both worlds- working as a civilian for the Navy!

Throughout my book the resounding theme is “There isn’t anything you cannot do.”  Having firsthand experience with many of the obstacles (Aircrew school, SERE school- POW training), this is a message I am very passionate about.  I have spoken at many of the schools in the local areas regarding this theme, as well as emphasis on the military and patriotism ,and have been met with an overwhelming positive response.
My next book “All Hands on Deck! Dad’s Coming Home!” is due for release this June-!  -Julia A. Maki Pyrah

No Time To Lose: A life in pursuit of deadly viruses by Peter Piot

No Time to Lose: A Life in Pursuit of Deadly Viruses

Peter Piot: "On the last Tuesday in September 1976 my boss at the microbiology lab was alerted that a special package was on its way to us from Zaire. It was flying in from Kinshasa: samples of blood from an unusual epidemic that seemed to be stirring in the distant Equatuer region, along the river Congo. Nothing quite like this had happened in the two years I had so far been working in a junior position at the lab in Antwerp, Belguim. But I knew it was part of the job. We sometimes took in strange samples of bodily fluids and tried to work out what they were. Our lab was certified to diagnose all kinds of diseases, including arbovirus infections like yellow fever, and the working hypothesis for this epidemic was reported to be 'yellow fever with hemorrhagic manifestations.'"

What was shipped in a cheap plastic thermos where one of the test tubes had broken and the ice was melting was so much worse than anything they expected: Ebola.

How To Be Organized by WikiHow

Take the pain out of getting yourself out the door to those fun activities you can only do during the summer and get organized by using these tips by WikiHow:
"If disorganization is congesting your life and you're feeling scattered and frustrated as a result, it's time to get organized. To achieve organization on the outside, you will need to take steps too on the inside, by clarifying your priorities, objectives, and how you want your belongings and lifestyle arranged. Try to keep stuff where it belongs. Know what you need/want to do, when you are going to do it, and avoid the stressful situation of not knowing what needs to be done. Organization takes time, but when you get into the habit of it, life becomes so much easier!"
For more information, check out the rest of the article: http://www.wikihow.com/Be-Organized

The library also has books on organizing under 640 and 648.8 or search under clutter or orderliness.
