Crazy for the Storm: a memoir of survival by Norman Ollestad

Imagine you are 11 years old, in a plane crash in the San Bernadino Mountains and you are the only survivor. What do you do?
Norman Ollestad, was in a plane crash in 1979 where his father, the pilot and then his father’s girlfriend, Sandra are killed. Norman is only eleven, but the skills his father taught him got him off the mountain on his own.
The story starts with anecdotes about Norman and his father surfing, skiing and living on Topanga Beach in California. Hair raising adventures includes a trip to Mexico to deliver a washer to his grandparents, while outrunning the Federales after refusing to pay bribes at a checkpoint.
Norman talks about his father: “My father craved the weightless glide. He chased hurricanes and blizzards to touch the bliss of riding mighty waves and deep powder snow. An insatiable spirit, he was crazy for the storm. And it saved my life.”
YouTube has an interview with Norman Ollestad with clips after he climbed down Ontario Peak: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqLnh1biSa0

Windows 7

Microsoft's new operating system, Windows 7 is scheduled to be released in October. The question, especially with Vista users is, "Should I upgrade?"

Techies that have seen the new software in action seem to be excited about the new software. It has been reported that Windows 7 goes a long way to address and improve the security, usability, and compatibility issues of Vista. Most reviews state that Win 7 looks good AND runs good. Performance and security have been improved. It runs faster, with less RAM. The user interface not only looks good but you can actually get things done with new usability features.

Book Review: The Brutal Telling by Louise Penny

Fifth in the series, Chief Inspector Gamache is called back to Three Pines to solve a murder. The book starts with Olivier Brule and the victim sitting in a log cabin, in the Quebec wilderness in front of a fire. A myth is told about Chaos and the Furies searching for the thing that was stolen. The night becomes late and Olivier soon leaves and hurries back the safety and security of Three Pines. The next morning, the man from the cabin is found dead in the bistro run by Olivier and Gabriel.
Gamache, with Inspector Beauvoir and Agent Lacoste, interview friends and suspects in Three Pines with the knowledge that one of the townspeople knew and killed the man, but no one – including Olivier - admits to knowing the victim or where he lived. Why kill him and place his body in the bistro?
Chief Inspector Gamache digs into the secrets of Three Pines. The colony of artists and their friends living in a country village seems bucolic but Three Pines has had more than their share of murder in the recent past. A deceptively peaceful setting: readers will be shocked when the killer is revealed.
If you haven’t read any books by Louise Penny, start with the first book in the series: Still Life.

New in the Kid's Room

Mike Stellar: Nerves of Steel
Things are not so stellar for Mike Stellar. He is stunned when his parents inform him that he has only eight hours to pack before they move to Mars. Despite the fact that he suspects his parents are involved in a major sabotage plot; that the only person who believes him is a girl who won’t shut up; and that his mother’s assistant seems to be spying on Mike’s every move, Mike is dealing with the same things that every eleven-year-old deals with: bad cafeteria food, a strict limitation on his electronic use, and a teacher who is so old-fashioned she must be from the year 2099.
With great humor and lots of action, K. A. Holt’s first novel is set to give fall reading an out-of-this-world blast of fun

Book Review: Identity Crisis by Debbie Mack

First Line: "I've never been a morning person, and if it's one thing I don't need before my first cup of coffee, it's a visit from the cops."
Sam McRae, defense lawyer, gets a courtesy call from the FBI and the local cops on one of her clients. Melanie Hays, accused of murdering her former boyfriend, appears to be missing. Sam, believing her client is innocent, finds herself looking for Melanie, running from the local mob, investigating murder among thieves and several cases of identity theft. A surprise twist keeps up the action with a great finish. Snappy dialogue and believable characters make the story action packed and hopefully the first book in the Sam McRae series.

The Whatchamacallit by Danny Danziger and Mark McCrum

Read about objects that we all recognize but don’t always know the names for. Do you know what a dongle, deckle or dibble is?
A few whatchamacallits from the book complete with anecdotes:
The Desire Line is the path that people will take independent of any existing pavement or road. You can see the desire line, straight or slightly crooked, beaten across grassy or muddy areas avoiding the signed route authorities would prefer you use.
MacGuffin is the object, event or character in a film or story that serves to set and keep the plot in motion. Alfred Hitchcock came up with the name MacGuffin in a 1939 lecture he gave at Columbia University and in the film, North by Northwest, the MacGuffin was "government secrets."
A Waldo is a mechanical hand held device for manipulating objects by remote control. It is generally used in hazardous environments. The first remote designed to control a television was developed by Zenith in 1950 and was called the Lazy Bones and connected to the television by a wire. 5 years later, the Zenith wireless remote was developed and called the Flashmatic.

Project Gutenberg

The oldest internet library, was started in 1971 by Michael S. Hart. Most items in project Gutenberg are full texts of public domain books. Michael Hart started Project Gutenberg while at the University of Illinois by first typing in the Declaration of Independence and then went on to type books by Shakespeare, Mark Twain, Homer and the Bible.

The main frame computer at the university Michael Hart used was one of the 15 nodes on the computer network that would become the Internet. Hart believed that computers would one day be accessible to the general public and decided to make works of literature available in electronic form for free. From Wikipedia.

Action Painting

Kids weren't just making a mess last Thursday! They were learning about the art style of Jackson Pollock by happily tossing, spraying and dabbling paint on large canvasses spread out on the library lawn. Two entire sheets were used to catch paint filled balloons, paint from spray bottles, and sponges soaked with paint. One of the canvasses will be hung in the children's room while the other will be cut up and given to the participants. Our special thanks and gratitude to Becca Sauer, who ran a great program!
Don't forget the puppet shows, this Thursday, July 2 at 10am and 1:30pm.

Splat!

Are you a frustrated artist? Do you have more creativity than you know what to do with? Do you have a thing for Jackson Pollock? Do you enjoy throwing paint? Or do you just enjoy getting messy?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then has the library got a program for you! On Thursday, June 25 at 1pm, we will host an art class for kids that will study the art of Jackson Pollock by, you guessed it, throwing paint.
This program has limited resources, so admittance will be first-come, first served. Also, dress in some sloppy clothes, because you WILL get paint on yourself...

Name your favorite books.

I have had many favorite books, starting with Little Women by Louisa May Alcott and Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. When in high school, I enjoyed Zane Grey westerns and Agatha Christie mysteries. As an adult, I will read the occasional nonfiction survival story, but my favorites are still mysteries. Here are a few of my favorite authors: Martha Grimes, Christopher Fowler, Charles Todd, and James R. Benn.

So what are your favorite books?
Write in and tell us.

Part of the South Dakota Biography series, extensive notes, bibliography and index make this a must read for anyone interested in the history of Deadwood. As a student or traveler to South Dakota, Seth Bullock by David A. Wolff and Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane by James D. McLaird are not to be missed. The recent popularity of the HBO series Deadwood brings added interest to the history of South Dakota during the Gold Rush period.

Seth Bullock was already in his late twenties when he went to Deadwood with Sol Star to open Star and Bullock Hardware. Seth Bullock’s many accomplishments during his lifetime include: first sheriff appointed by Governor Pennington to bring order to Deadwood; the first Black Hills Reserve forest supervisor; and Bullock as U.S. Marshal for South Dakota appointed by President Teddy Roosevelt.

Seth Bullock died, September 23, 1919 in Deadwood at the age of 73 and is buried next to his wife, Martha, in the cemetery above Deadwood.

Microsoft's New and Enhanced Search Engine Named 'Bing' Debuts

Microsoft's new general search engine, named Bing, is now live and ready for use.

The ResourceShelf Newsletter offers the following comment:

"Overall, while it's good and important to have another unique database of web content out there, we are a bit saddened to see the lack of new feature and services with this first release of Bing as opposed to what was available with Live.com. Bing is worth knowing about and using, but getting the masses to switch to it as their default search tool will be a massive challenge. Time will tell. Expect to see a lot of advertising for Bing. Finally, Bing Maps (and imagery) continues to mesmerize, and the limiting functions for images and video are very useful."

So if you want to try something other than Google or Yahoo move on over a give Bing an try.

What is on your summer reading and viewing list?

Valkyrie: read the book, see the movie.

Valkyrie: the story of the plot to kill Hitler by its last member by Philipp Freiherr von Boeselager.
Valkyrie is the code name for the plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler and Heinrich Himmler. Philipps Freiherr von Boeselager, author and last surviving member of the plot, and his brother joined a group of conspirators after discovering the cold-blooded brutality of the SS under orders from an increasingly unstable Hitler. First the assassination and then the bomb attempt failed, the SS launched an attack on co-conspirators. One by one the conspirators were caught, tortured and executed.

Valkyrie starring Tom Cruise and Kenneth Branagh
Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise,) joins conspirators to kill Adolf Hitler (David Bamber). Codenamed, Valkyrie, the assassination attempt fails and a second attempt is made. Another suspenseful war movie with well known actors, director Bryan Singer shows the point of view from the conspirators' camp.

New in tween fiction: Talia Talk by Christine Hurley Deriso

SO YOU THINK your mom is embarrassing? You won’t after you meet mine. She’s the co-host of a morning television show and her host chat has covered everything I’ve done from puking on my piano teacher’s shoes to gluing antlers on my head.
But I’ve got the microphone now and I’m doing weekly commentaries on my school’s broadcast/podcast. Don’t get me wrong—mom’s awesome, and I’d never really want to freak her out. But if viewers get to hear about my private life, why can’t I dish about Mom’s new boyfriend, or how dorky she is as a school volunteer? Did I mention my friendships with my loud, bossy BFF and former BFFs are in total flux? And what is this thing called middle school? Definitely stay tuned.
From the Hardcover edition.

Website of the Week: Nevada Barr, author

http://www.nevadabarr.com/
Nevada Barr is one of many authors who has a website to promote their books. Her main character, Anna Pigeon, Park Ranger, solves mysteries in each of the national parks where she is stationed.
In her latest book, Borderline, in the Anna Pigeon Series, Anna and her husband travel to Big Bend National Park for a rafting trip.
Part of the appeal of Nevada Barr’s books – beside the mystery – is that Anna is stationed in a different national park with each book: Isle Royale National Park, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Lassen Volcanic National Park, and Yosemite National Park, to name a few.
Like most author websites, you can view her biography, her book lists with a link to purchase books, and her tour schedule. She also has a link to the National Park Website. You can even sign up for her mailing list.
On the Nevada Barr Blog, when asked how Nevada came up with the name “Pigeon” for Anna, this was her answer:
“When I lived in Minneapolis there was, across the river, in St. Paul, a fine children’s ‘touch and see’ museum. The woman running it was tall and beautiful and moved like a ghost. She had a square, strong face and shining brown hair to her waist. I was besotted. Her name was Anna Pidgeon. Years later, when I began the series, I thought of her and, would you believe it, misspelled her name.”

Attention Fans of the Betsy-Tacy Series

Fans of the beloved Minnesota author Maud Hart Lovelace and her somewhat-autobiographical books, the Betsy-Tacy series, plan to converge on Mankato, Minnesota for a convention taking place July 17-20, 2009 at the Alltel Center.

Popular and prolific author Meg Cabot (The Princess Diaries) will discuss her love of Betsy and Tacy as the keynote speaker of the convention. The Maud Hart Lovelace Society is also planning a post-convention Twin Cities Tour of Maud/Betsy sites.

Book Review:The Lost City of Z: a Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon by David Grann

British explorer Percy Harrison Fawcett disappears on his last search for the Lost City of Z which becomes the “Atlantis” of the Amazon region. David Grann, along with countless others in the last 80 years, goes on a quest to find out what happened to Colonel Fawcett, his son, Jack and friend Raleigh Rimell after their disappearance in the Amazon in 1925.
Fawcett, an intrepid explorer, had made countless trips to the Amazon under the funding of the Royal Geographical Society. He was the last of the great explorers and his exploits captured society’s imagination. While surviving hostile natives, insects, disease, and wild animals, Fawcett managed to map regions no white man had explored and he did it at such a rapid pace, he often left his fellow adventurers behind. He had little patience for physical ailments often suffered by others on his expeditions as he remained in remarkable health under the worst conditions.
David Grann interviewed Fawcett’s granddaughter and great-granddaughter and was allowed access to Fawcett’s diaries, letters and photographs. After extensive research, David Grann, with the help of guide Paolo Pinage, travelled into the area of the Amazon where Fawcett and companions were last seen and what he found was remarkable.
For more information about Percy Harrison Fawcett, see the extensive bibliography and one of many websites: www.colonelfawcett.net

Starvation Lake, in northern Michigan, is a small resort town barely surviving, where people relive the glory years and the jarring defeat of their one chance of winning the state hockey tournament with Coach Blackburn who raised young players to be great hockey players.
Within days of Gus’ return, parts of the coach’s snowmobile has surfaced, but not on the lake where the accident occurred. The accident turns into an investigation of murder when a bullet hole is found in the snowmobile.
Gus relives the past as he becomes reacquainted with the present town and people. He wonders what happened to his old coach during the years he was gone. Suspenseful with fully formed quirky characters often found in small towns and the violent action during the hockey games provide punch to the twist at the end.
First book in the Starvation Lake series by author, Bryan Gruley; visit the following websites for further information: http://www.bryangruley.com/ and http://www.starvationlake.com/

Website of the Week

Books arrive in serial form into your email. According to DailyLit, the idea came after the New York Times serialized a few classic works in special supplements a few summers ago. By adding books to email, a person can read a short section of a book every day in 5 minutes or less. In the 19th Century, Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle often wrote in serials for popular magazines. The Internet encourages readers and writers return to the serial format.
